Osteoporosis is the demineralization of bones. It is important to check for osteoporosis as we get older for it can be stabilized with therapy. After 50 years of age, it is recommended to have a Bone Density done every 2 years. . At Amherst Radiology, we have a G.E. Lunar unit on which we determine Osteoporosis on the lower back and hips.

What It's For

It is used to detect osteoporosis, other bone diseases, and the effectiveness of treatments for bone loss. You should have this done when:

  • Post menopausal women
  • have a history of fractures
  • You are on medications that may cause bone loss
  • Have an existing medical condition associated with bone loss
  • Type one diabetic
  • Hyperthyroidism/hyperparathyroidism
  • Liver or Kidney Disease
  • Have osteoporosis in family history
  • Over 50 years of age
